At the Southern Cemetery in Manchester, the 85th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre was solemnly commemorated. The event brought together representatives of Polish authorities, diplomats, community organizations, and the Polish diaspora. The delegation was led by the Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, who, together with fellow senators, paid tribute to the victims.
The Katyn Memorial in Manchester was founded in the 1990s on the initiative of the local Polish community. It was made possible thanks to the efforts of veterans’ associations, the Polish Union, scouting organizations, parishes, and sports clubs. Its unveiling took place in the presence of Manchester officials and the grandson of Winston Churchill, making it a highly symbolic event.
Since its unveiling, the Katyn Memorial has been the site of annual commemorations. Every year, Polish scouts, diaspora organizations, and community representatives gather here to lay wreaths and light candles in honor of the victims.
The distinguished Polish poet Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska is buried at the Southern Cemetery. Her presence in Manchester symbolizes the lasting contribution of Polish culture and literature to the history of the diaspora.
Also resting at this cemetery is Stanisława Paleolog, the founder of the Polish women’s police force. Her grave, like the Katyn Memorial, remains a focal point for remembrance and a testament to Polish achievements abroad.
For decades, Poles in Manchester have been actively involved in organizations, Saturday schools, and scouting. Thanks to their dedication, the memory of Katyn victims and other national heroes continues to be preserved for future generations.
During the commemoration, Polish Consul General Ireneusz Truszkowski highlighted the vital role of the diaspora in maintaining national identity and promoting Poland’s history among Britons. Senators stressed that the diaspora is an essential partner in diplomacy and a bridge between Poland and the United Kingdom.
The commemoration concluded with a concert of Fryderyk Chopin’s music performed by pianist Alicja Kojder. The performance symbolically underlined that Polish culture remains alive and inspiring, regardless of geographical boundaries.
The 85th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre was not only a moment of remembrance but also an opportunity for integration and dialogue within the Polish community in the UK. As Marshal Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska emphasized, the diaspora plays a crucial role in building bridges between Poland and its citizens around the world.
