Monika Kowalczyk and her Touristic Blues

In the first episode of the series “Tourist Blues,” Monika Kowalczyk takes us on a journey through the scenic landscapes of Lancashire, in the northwest of England. Despite lockdown restrictions and gusty weather, she encourages viewers to explore local gems – with family, kids, or even a dog.

The adventure begins with the extraordinary sound sculpture “Singing Ringing Tree,” created in 2006 as part of the Panopticon project. Perched atop Crown Point hill near Burnley, the installation is made from galvanized steel pipes that create mesmerizing sounds when struck by the wind.

A short walk away lies Dunk Show Memorial Woodlands – a peaceful, man-made grove where trees are planted in memory of loved ones.

Next stop: “Halo” in Haslingden – a massive, steel ring structure illuminated by LED lights at night. Although unlit during the day, its futuristic design is captivating.

Monika then explores a large wind farm, one of the biggest onshore farms in the UK. With 26 turbines and a length of over 3.5 km, it offers sweeping views of nearby hills and the Cheston Brook Valley nature reserve. This area includes remnants of an old mill and historic coal mines, first established in the 16th century.

Towards the end of the episode, Monika shares her honest impressions – from awe at the natural beauty to disappointment at littering in the forest. Still, she encourages everyone to get outside, appreciate what’s nearby, and reconnect with nature.
