The program began with a discussion on the fundamentals of UK employment law. Ms. Papatolios emphasized that, unlike in many European countries, employment law in the UK is not codified in a single legal act, such as a Labor Code. Instead, legal regulations are scattered across various statutes, regulations, and judicial precedents. Key laws include the Employment Rights Act, the Equality Act, and the Health and Safety at Work Act.
An important point of discussion was employees' rights and the fact that employers are obligated to ensure safe and hygienic working conditions and to comply with labour law regulations. The conversation also addressed protection against unfair dismissal and rights to maternity and paternity leave. Ms. Papatolios highlighted that employees who have worked for an employer for at least two years are protected against unfair dismissal.
When discussing workplace discrimination, the importance of documenting any incidents of discrimination and taking appropriate legal steps was emphasized, including contacting a union representative or filing a claim with the Employment Tribunal.
At the end of the program, the key employee rights that everyone should be aware of were summarized, including the right to fair pay, the right to a written employment contract, the right to safe working conditions, and the right to join trade unions.
