II Polish Burns Supper in Liverpool – An Evening of Poetry, Music, and Scottish Traditions

On Saturday, January 25, 2025, the II Polish Burns Supper took place in Liverpool—an extraordinary gathering that blended Polish and Scottish culture in the spirit of poetry, music, and traditional flavours. The event was organized by Magdalena and Sergiusz Pinkwart, Beata Beti Szymańska (Beti Czyta), with the gracious cooperation of Krzysztof and Ola, the owners of the "U Bercika Liverpool" restaurant.

The evening paid tribute to Robert Burns (1759–1796), one of Scotland’s most significant poets, renowned for his countless poems and songs, including the famous "Auld Lang Syne." His works, filled with humour, nostalgia, and a deep love for Scottish culture, were performed in the original and Polish translations throughout the night.

Distinguished guests recited Burns' poetry, including the Consul of the Republic of Poland in Manchester, Radosław Gromski, who passionately delivered "My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose." Adam Nazarczyk, a proper Highlander from Liverpool, presented "My Heart’s in the Highlands" in the traditional Highlander dialect, while Sergiusz Pinkwart gave the conventional "Address to a Haggis." The splendid "Toast to the Lassies" was raised by Tomek Zwegrodzki from Kraina Baśni, along with Wioletta Zakrzewska representing Radio Polonia FM – Twój głos w UK.

During the evening, guests savoured traditional Scottish haggis, specially imported from Scotland and prepared by the chefs at "U Bercika Liverpool." The delightful meal was accompanied by fine whisky and an extraordinary musical performance by a string trio featuring Sergiusz Pinkwart, Joanna Jóźwiak (violin), and Jan Kojder (cello).

The night was filled with laughter, emotion, and an incredible sense of community. The Polish Burns Supper provided a unique opportunity for Polish expatriates to unite, explore Scottish traditions, and celebrate literature. Adding to the festive spirit, the hosts appeared in traditional Scottish kilts, fully embracing the essence of the event.

The organizers announced that the Burns Supper will become a permanent fixture in Liverpool’s cultural calendar. During the evening, the Brave Hearts – Robert Burns Club in Liverpool was established, which will organize future editions and share information about upcoming events.

It was an unforgettable evening that will remain in the participants' hearts forever. We already eagerly anticipate the next edition of this fantastic event!
